What does it take to turn creativity into a sustainable career? For Filipino content creators Baus Rufo, Carlo Ople, and Jaz Reyes, success goes beyond views, followers, and online popularity. It starts with taking the first step, showing up consistently, and making intentional decisions that support both creative growth and financial well-being.

During Sun Life Philippines’ first-ever creator camp, “One Day to Day One,” the three creators shared lessons from their personal journeys, offering aspiring content creators practical advice on creating meaningful content, overcoming self-doubt, and turning creative passion into lasting opportunities.

Start Before You’re Ready

For comedian, content creator, and event producer Baus Rufo, building a creative career was a journey rather than an overnight success. During his talk, Rufo reflected on his transition from advertising leadership roles to a career focused on comedy, content creation, and performance.

Instead of waiting for the perfect opportunity, Rufo encouraged aspiring creators to take small and calculated steps toward their goals. He highlighted the importance of continuous learning, reinvention, and being willing to “fail forward.”

One of his key reminders was simple: “Done is better than good.”

Rufo also shared the realities of freelancing and creative work, including dealing with uncertainty, investing in personal growth, and building trusted professional relationships. For him, these lessons helped create a career that combines creative fulfillment with financial freedom.

Consistency Beats Confidence

Former sports broadcaster, host, and content creator Jaz Reyes challenged the idea that creators need confidence before they can begin.

According to Reyes, self-doubt is part of the creative process. Many creators overthink their ideas, worry about how audiences will respond, and question whether anyone will care. The important thing is to keep creating and publishing anyway.

“We doubt ourselves. We overthink. We wonder if anyone will care. We still hit ‘Post’ anyway,” Reyes shared.

Drawing from her experiences as a radio DJ, host, and content creator, she encouraged aspiring influencers to focus on progress instead of perfection. Her key lessons included choosing curiosity over perfection, taking action to create momentum, and understanding that consistency can be more important than confidence.

Reyes emphasized that confidence is developed through action rather than waiting for the perfect moment.

“Confidence comes from doing, not waiting to feel ready,” she said.

Turning Passion Into Opportunity

During a fireside chat, entrepreneur and content creator Carlo Ople joined Sun Life financial advisor and content creator Jacklord Esguerra to discuss how creators can build influence while also achieving financial stability.

For Esguerra, content creation began with a simple goal: making financial concepts easier for Filipinos to understand. Although he was initially told that insurance content would not attract audiences, he chose to focus on education rather than selling.

“People don’t like being sold to. They want to be informed, inspired, and educated,” Esguerra explained.

His early content received little attention, but he remained consistent. Over time, audiences discovered and shared his posts, while others began reaching out to him for financial guidance. Today, content creation has become an important way for Esguerra to educate and serve more Filipinos on their financial journeys.

Ople likewise emphasized the importance of taking a long-term approach. What began as a gaming blog while he was working in the corporate world eventually developed into multiple businesses built around content creation.

Rather than immediately leaving his corporate career, Ople spent more than 17 years balancing his job with his passion for content. His journey showed that creative pursuits and financial security can grow alongside each other.

“The more sources of revenue, the more sources of income, the better,” Ople said.

Together, the creators highlighted a practical approach to building a sustainable content career: start small, consistently create value, and recognize that meaningful opportunities can develop long before success becomes visible.

From “One Day” to Day One

Despite coming from different backgrounds, Baus Rufo, Jaz Reyes, and Carlo Ople shared a common message: success rarely starts with certainty—it starts with action.

For aspiring Filipino content creators, taking the first step can mean publishing a first video, pursuing a passion project, trying a new content format, or making smarter financial decisions for the future.

The lessons shared during Sun Life Philippines’ “One Day to Day One” creator camp show that meaningful creative careers are built gradually through consistency, courage, learning, and intentional choices.

The journey from “One Day” to “Day One” does not require perfection or complete confidence. Sometimes, it simply requires the willingness to start.
